This Day in Sports Betting History - July 24: The Pine Tar Game

1983 (MLB)-

With the Kansas City Royals down 4-3, George Brett's go-ahead 2-run homer with 2 outs in the top half of the 9th inning is nullified after New York Yankees manager Billy Martin requests that the umpires inspect Brett's bat for pine tar.

The Royals, who were +140 road underdogs for the game, would protest the game and AL president Lee MacPhail ruled that the game be continued from the point of Brett's home run. The game resumed on August 18 as the Royals were now -280 favorites. Reliever Dan Quisenberry pitched a perfect 9th giving Kansas City a 5-4 victory.
